    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Pathology
    • Comparative Oncology

    Background:

    • Malignant melanoma is a neoplastic proliferation of melanocytes.
    • This condition affects various animal species, presenting diverse clinical and pathological features.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the pathological characteristics of malignant melanomas in equids, bovines, and swine.
    • To investigate the microscopic and ultrastructural features of these tumors.

    Main Methods:

    • Histopathological examination of tumor tissues.
    • Electron microscopy to analyze cellular structures and melanosomes.

    Main Results:

    • In horses (5), tumors were tegumentally located and generalized, with microscopic findings including pigment cells and multinucleated cells. Hypophyseal microcysts and an adenoma were noted.
    • In cattle (1 calf, 1 cow), generalized visceral malignant melanomas were observed, with cerebral involvement in one cow.
    • In swine (2), malignant melanomas showed visceral generalization in a Duroc and cutaneous localization in a Bazna.

    Conclusions:

    • Malignant melanomas exhibit varied presentations and localizations across different animal species.
    • Ultrastructural analysis revealed differentiated melanophores and melanophages with characteristic melanosomes.
