    Background:

    • Aplastic anemia is a rare bone marrow failure disorder.
    • Immune dysregulation is implicated in some cases of aplastic anemia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate lymphocyte subsets and T-cell function in patients with aplastic anemia.
    • To explore the correlation between T-cell abnormalities and disease characteristics or treatment response.

    Main Methods:

    • Enumeration of lymphocyte subsets in 31 aplastic anemia patients.
    • Assessment of T-cell proliferation in response to pokeweed mitogen (PWM).
    • Evaluation of suppressor cell activity and correlation with T-cell phenotype.

    Main Results:

    • 26% of patients exhibited a reversed helper/suppressor T-cell ratio.

  • Reduced T-cell proliferation (hyporesponsiveness) was observed in 7 of 18 patients, particularly those with a reversed ratio.
  • Suppressor activity was noted in 8 of 18 patients, independent of T-cell phenotype.
  • Patients with lower T-cell counts showed a higher response rate to treatment (73%) compared to those with normal T-cell counts (26%).
