Medical care of the deinstitutionalized mentally retarded

Long-term use of medications, exposure to hepatitis B, problems with sexuality and special contraception needs are commonly encountered. The physician who provides care for patients in this setting can serve as a central referral source and coordinator of medical services, as well as an educator to staff and family.
