    Summary

    Alfentanil is a suitable narcotic analgesic for short ambulatory surgeries, comparable to fentanyl. This study found no significant differences in recovery or side effects between the two drugs.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy and safety of alfentanil with fentanyl in balanced anesthesia for short surgical procedures.
    • To evaluate recovery parameters and side effects in ambulatory patients receiving either alfentanil or fentanyl.

    • A balanced anesthesia technique was employed using thiopentone and pancuronium.
    • Eighty female patients undergoing pelvic laparoscopy were divided into two groups, receiving either alfentanil or fentanyl.
    • Anesthetic duration, extubation time, verbal response, orientation, vital signs, and postoperative nausea were assessed.

    Conclusions:

    • Alfentanil does not offer a significant advantage over fentanyl for these types of procedures.
    • Further research may explore specific patient populations or different surgical durations.
