    Summary

    Platelet aggregation responses to serotonin (5-HT) did not differ between healthy controls and individuals with depression. This suggests normal peripheral 5-HT2 receptor function in drug-free depressed patients.

    Background:

    • Serotonin (5-HT) system dysregulation is implicated in major depressive disorder.
    • Peripheral serotonin receptors, particularly 5-HT2 receptors, are investigated as potential biomarkers for depression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the functional responsiveness of peripheral serotonin receptors in drug-free patients with depression compared to healthy controls.
    • To investigate potential abnormalities in 5-HT2 receptor activity associated with depressive illness.

    • Platelet aggregation was induced by serotonin (5-HT) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP).
    • The 5-HT/ADP ratio was used to measure the functional response of peripheral serotonin receptors.
