    Summary

    Patients with active multiple sclerosis (MS) have lower T8+ cell fluorescence intensity, suggesting reduced T-suppressor/cytotoxic cell numbers and function. Stable MS patients showed no difference compared to controls.

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system.
    • T-suppressor/cytotoxic (T8+) cells play a crucial role in immune regulation.
    • Alterations in T8+ cell populations have been implicated in MS pathogenesis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate T8+ cell median fluorescence intensity in patients with active or stable multiple sclerosis (MS) compared to healthy controls.
    • To explore the relationship between T8+ cell antigen density and enumeration methods.

    Main Methods:

    • Peripheral blood T8+ cells were analyzed using fluorescence-activated cell sorting and indirect immunofluorescence.
    • T8+ cells were modulated in vitro with OKT8 to assess antigen density effects.
