Choosing the programme for an international congress.

    Summary

Selecting scientific abstracts for conferences is challenging. A large panel of 12 assessors showed limited agreement, but using smaller groups of three selectors proved cost-effective and fair for abstract grading.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Education
    • Scientific Publishing

    Background:

    • International congresses receive numerous abstract submissions, necessitating a rigorous selection process.
    • Abstract quality and presentation significantly influence acceptance rates, with typically only 15% being accepted.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the reliability and efficiency of abstract selection methods for international congresses.
    • To determine an optimal number of assessors for abstract grading to balance cost and fairness.

    Main Methods:

    • A panel of 12 assessors evaluated submitted abstracts based on specialized knowledge and presentation.
    • Inter-assessor agreement was statistically analyzed to gauge reliability.
    • The cost-effectiveness of using the full panel versus smaller, randomly assigned groups was compared.

    Main Results:

    • Limited agreement was found among individual assessors when ranking abstracts by merit.
    • A single assessor's judgment was deemed insufficient for fair selection.
    • Utilizing the full panel of 12 assessors was prohibitively expensive.

    Conclusions:

    • Randomly dividing the abstract selection workload among groups of three assessors is a cost-effective strategy.
    • This approach minimizes unacceptable injustice in the abstract selection process.
    • Optimizing assessor group size enhances the efficiency of scientific abstract review.
