    Background:

    • Surgery is often presumed to suppress the immune system, but data in healthy pediatric patients is limited.
    • Previous studies on immune response to surgery in adults have yielded conflicting results.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the impact of elective surgery on immune function in healthy children.
    • To assess both neutrophil and lymphocyte responses following common pediatric surgical procedures.

    Main Methods:

    • Fifty healthy children (mean age 20 months) undergoing elective surgery (primarily inguinal herniorrhaphy) were studied.
    • Immune function assays included neutrophil counts, migration, phagocytosis, bacterial killing, and serum opsonization.
    • Lymphocyte subsets (T cells, B cells, T-helper, T-suppressor) and their ratios were quantified pre- and post-operatively.

    • Absolute neutrophil counts significantly increased post-surgery (P < 0.01), with no changes in neutrophil function or serum opsonic capacity.
