HpD photodynamic therapy for obstructing lung cancer
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) shows high efficacy in treating endobronchial lung cancer. This red light treatment with hematoporphyrin derivative achieved complete response in 20 out of 22 patients.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Pulmonology
- Photomedicine
Background:
- Endobronchial lung cancers present unique treatment challenges.
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers a minimally invasive treatment option.
Observation:
- A protocol using hematoporphyrin derivative (HpD) and red light (630 nm) was administered to 22 patients with endobronchial cancer.
- Treatment involved intravenous HpD 72 hours before endoscopic laser illumination.
Findings:
- Twenty out of 22 patients achieved a complete response to PDT.
- Nineteen patients with large obstructing tumors and one with a mucosal lesion responded completely.
- One patient with an obstructing tumor had a partial response; another with a non-tumorous fibrous mass showed no response.
Implications:
- PDT is a highly effective treatment for endobronchial lung cancer, particularly for obstructing tumors.
- The findings support PDT as a valuable therapeutic modality in lung cancer management.
- Further research may refine PDT protocols for optimal patient outcomes.
