Pituitary adenomas in old age.

K Kovacs, N Ryan, E Horvath

    Journal of Gerontology
    |January 1, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

Pituitary adenomas are common in older adults, with prolactin-producing tumors being the most frequent type found incidentally. Further research is needed to understand the behavior of these age-related pituitary tumors.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Pathology
    • Gerontology

    Background:

    • Pituitary adenomas are tumors of the pituitary gland.
    • Their prevalence in the elderly population, particularly as incidental findings, is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of pituitary adenomas in individuals over 80 years of age.
    • To determine the most common hormone-producing types of pituitary adenomas in this age group.

    Main Methods:

    • Histological examination of 152 pituitary glands from autopsies of individuals over 80 years old.
    • Application of various staining techniques, including immunoperoxidase staining.

    Main Results:

    • Twenty-two pituitary adenomas were identified in 20 out of 152 investigated pituitaries.
    • Prolactin-producing adenomas were the most frequent type, found in 9 out of 17 adenomas analyzed.
    • One adenoma showed co-expression of prolactin and growth hormone.

    Conclusions:

    • Pituitary adenomas are common incidental findings in the elderly.
    • Prolactinomas are the predominant pituitary tumor type in advanced age.
    • The clinical behavior and growth rate of these incidental pituitary adenomas require further investigation.
