    Summary

    Patients with hyperabsorptive hypercalciuria and kidney stones show reduced bone formation. Bone histology reveals decreased osteoblast activity and impaired mineralization, suggesting altered bone metabolism in these individuals.

    Background:

    • Idiopathic hypercalciuria with recurrent calcium oxalate stones is common.
    • The underlying bone metabolism in absorptive hypercalciuria is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate bone histology and cellular activity in patients with absorptive hypercalciuria and kidney stones.

    Main Methods:

    • Iliac crest bone biopsies from 15 patients were analyzed using quantitative histomorphometry.
    • Undecalcified sections were examined with fluorescent microscopy after tetracycline labeling.
    • Urinary calcium and cAMP excretion were measured under basal and stimulated conditions.

    Main Results:

    • Osteoclastic resorption was normal or low.
