    Area of Science:

    • Neuropathology
    • Neurodegenerative Diseases

    Background:

    • Investigating the neuropathological underpinnings of progressive dementia.
    • Examining the coexistence of distinct neurodegenerative pathologies in a single case.

    Observation:

    • A 69-year-old male patient presented with progressive dementia over three years.
    • Neuropathological examination revealed senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles characteristic of Alzheimer's disease.
    • Neuronal loss, depigmentation in substantia nigra and locus caeruleus, and Lewy-type inclusions indicative of Parkinson's disease were observed.

    Findings:

    • The case demonstrated the co-occurrence of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease pathologies.
    • Lewy-type inclusions were found throughout the central nervous system (CNS), including brain stem nuclei.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • Suggests a potential nosological link between Alzheimer's disease and paralysis agitans (Parkinson's disease).
    • Highlights the importance of considering overlapping pathologies in neurodegenerative dementia.
    • Informs differential diagnosis and understanding of complex neurodegenerative disorders.
