Reoperation for bronchial carcinoma.

    Summary

Reoperation for bronchial carcinoma recurrence is uncommon but offers survival benefits. Consider reoperation for lung cancer patients if the initial surgery was radical and recurrence is suspected.

    Area of Science:

    • Thoracic Surgery
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Pulmonary Medicine

    Background:

    • Recurrence of bronchial carcinoma after initial surgery necessitates further treatment.
    • Intrathoracic metastasis can occur following primary lung cancer resection.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of reoperation for recurrent bronchial carcinoma.
    • To assess the survival rates and feasibility of secondary surgical intervention.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 17 patients undergoing reoperation for bronchial carcinoma recurrence or metastasis.
    • Details of primary and secondary surgical procedures, including pneumonectomy and wedge excision, were reviewed.

    Main Results:

    • Three patients (17.6%) died within 30 days of reoperation.
    • Of the 14 surviving patients, eight died later with an average survival of 18 months.
    • Six patients remain alive, with two surviving over five years post-reoperation.

    Conclusions:

    • Reoperation for recurrent bronchial carcinoma is rarely performed but can be considered.
    • Patients surviving initial lung cancer surgery should be evaluated for reoperation if recurrence is suspected and the primary procedure was radical.
