Topical antibiotics and minor skin trauma
Abstract:
Recent double-blind controlled studies show that the application of a neomycin-bacitracin-polymyxin preparation reduces the incidence of staphylococcal and streptococcal infection of minor skin trauma. Allergic sensitization to neomycin is rare. Systemic side effects occur only with improper massive exposure. Resistant strains have appeared only in "closed populations." It is concluded that topical antibiotic combinations are safe and effective.
Insights
Topical antibiotic combinations containing neomycin, bacitracin, and polymyxin effectively prevent bacterial infections in minor skin injuries. These antibiotic preparations are safe for general use, with rare side effects and minimal risk of resistance development.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Infectious Diseases
- Microbiology
Background:
- Minor skin trauma presents a risk for bacterial infections.
- Staphylococcal and streptococcal species are common pathogens in skin infections.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical neomycin-bacitracin-polymyxin preparations.
- To assess the incidence of infection and adverse effects associated with topical antibiotic use.
Main Methods:
- Double-blind controlled studies were conducted.
- The application of a neomycin-bacitracin-polymyxin preparation was investigated.
Main Results:
- The topical antibiotic preparation significantly reduced the incidence of staphylococcal and streptococcal infections.
- Allergic sensitization to neomycin was rare.
- Systemic side effects were observed only with improper, massive exposure.
- Resistant bacterial strains emerged solely within "closed populations."
Conclusions:
- Topical antibiotic combinations are safe and effective for preventing infections in minor skin trauma.
- The benefits of topical antibiotics outweigh the risks for most patients.
- Judicious use is recommended to minimize potential for resistance.

Local Anesthetics: Common Agents and Their Applications
Cocaine is an ester of benzoic acid and methylecgogine. It is used to anesthetize and vasoconstrict locally. Currently, it is used primarily for topical applications.
