    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Psychosomatic Medicine
    • Medical Classification Systems

    Background:

    • The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Second Edition (DSM-II) classification system inadequately categorizes psychophysiologic disorders.
    • Current classifications treat psychophysiologic disorders as distinct from other organic diseases, overlooking the interplay of psychological and physical health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose a novel, multiaxial classification system for psychiatric and physical disorders.
    • To enable clinicians to assess and document the influence of psychological factors on any physical disorder.

    Main Methods:

    • Critique of the existing DSM-II classification for psychophysiologic disorders.
    • Proposal of a multiaxial framework for integrating psychological and physical disorder assessment.

    Main Results:

    • Identified shortcomings in the DSM-II's distinct categorization of psychophysiologic disorders.
    • Developed a multiaxial approach to classify physical disorders based on the role of psychological factors.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed multiaxial system offers a more comprehensive method for psychiatric nomenclature.
    • This approach allows for the evaluation of psychological influences across all physical disorders, not just those traditionally deemed psychosomatic.
