    Summary

    Peripheral neuropathy affects 16.7% of epileptic patients, regardless of anticonvulsant type. This study found no specific link between phenytoin use and neuropathy in epilepsy patients.

    Background:

    • Peripheral neuropathy is a potential complication of epilepsy treatment.
    • Anticonvulsant medications are widely used for epilepsy management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in epileptic patients.
    • To investigate the relationship between anticonvulsant use, particularly phenytoin, and peripheral neuropathy.

    Main Methods:

    • Cross-sectional study of 186 epileptic patients.
    • Clinical examination including sensory testing and reflex assessment.
    • Electrophysiologic tests (nerve conduction studies, H and F responses).

    Main Results:

    • Peripheral neuropathy prevalence was 16.7% in the study cohort.

    • The study did not establish a specific association between phenytoin and peripheral neuropathy.
    • Further research may be needed to elucidate the exact causes and risk factors.
