    Summary

    Type 2 poliovirus VP1 protein alterations were common in vaccine strains from Japan. These changes in viral protein VP1 occurred frequently but showed no link to clinical or genetic markers.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze viral structural proteins of type 2 poliovirus strains.
    • To investigate alterations in poliovirus proteins from vaccine and contact cases in Japan.
    • To determine the frequency and characteristics of protein changes in Sabin type 2 poliovirus.

    • Analysis of 17 type 2 poliovirus strains.

    • These findings highlight the dynamic nature of poliovirus structural proteins in vivo.
    • Further research may explore the implications of VP1 alterations on poliovirus characteristics.
