    Background:

    • Whooping cough, caused by Bordetella pertussis, remains a significant pediatric respiratory infection.
    • Antimicrobial therapy is crucial for reducing transmission and duration of illness.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of erythromycin and co-trimoxazole in eradicating Bordetella pertussis from the nasopharynx of children with whooping cough.

    Main Methods:

    • A study involving 22 hospitalized children diagnosed with whooping cough.
    • Nasopharyngeal cultures were taken to assess bacterial clearance after treatment with either erythromycin or co-trimoxazole.

    Main Results:

    • Both erythromycin and co-trimoxazole demonstrated effectiveness in treating pertussis.
    • Despite treatment, 10 out of 22 patients (approximately 45%) had positive nasopharyngeal cultures four or more days after commencing antimicrobial therapy.

    • While both antibiotics are effective against Bordetella pertussis, persistent nasopharyngeal carriage can occur even with appropriate treatment.
    • Further research may be needed to optimize treatment strategies for complete bacterial eradication in pertussis.
