    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Hypercalcemia, a paraneoplastic syndrome, rarely complicates small-cell lung cancer. This study found significant bone involvement in all seven cases, with normal parathormone levels despite high calcium.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Endocrinology

    Background:

    • Hypercalcemia is a frequent paraneoplastic syndrome in lung cancer.
    • It is infrequently associated with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC).

    Observation:

    • Seven cases of SCLC with hypercalcemia were reviewed.
    • Clinical data suggested substantial bone or bone marrow involvement in all patients.

    Findings:

    • Parathormone (PTH) levels were generally within the normal range.
    • PTH levels were inappropriately normal given the severity of hypercalcemia.

    Implications:

    • This suggests non-PTH mediated mechanisms for hypercalcemia in SCLC.
    • Highlights the importance of investigating bone involvement in SCLC patients presenting with hypercalcemia.
