    Summary

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) hepatitis was identified in seven surgically treated cancer patients. Staff with high anti-CMV antibody levels may have transmitted the virus due to hygiene failures.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Virology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Context:

    • Endemic hepatitis cases occurred in a surgical ward among cancer patients.
    • Three cases were HBsAg positive, while seven were initially classified as non-A, non-B hepatitis.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the cause of endemic hepatitis in a surgical ward.
    • To differentiate between viral hepatitis types and identify the causative agent in non-A, non-B cases.

    Summary:

    • Ten hepatitis cases in surgically treated cancer patients were analyzed for epidemiological, clinical, biochemical, cytological, and immunological aspects.
    • Clinical and serological data excluded hepatitis A, B, Epstein-Barr virus, and Toxoplasma.
    • Seven non-A, non-B hepatitis cases were identified as cytomegalovirus (CMV) hepatitis.
    • High antibody levels against CMV in surgical ward staff suggest their role in virus transmission.

    Impact:

    • Identifies cytomegalovirus as a cause of nosocomial hepatitis in immunocompromised patients.
    • Highlights potential breaches in hygiene protocols contributing to viral spread in healthcare settings.
    • Underscores the importance of vigilant infection control measures for surgical patients.
