    Background:

    • The patient died of confluent bronchopneumonia.

    • Candida albicans pseudomycelia were found within the ulcer bed.
    • Ultrastructural study revealed dual herpesvirus and Candida infection within individual esophageal epithelial cells at the ulcer edge.
