    Summary

    Cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in rabbit extraocular muscle are normal structures, not signs of pathology. These findings suggest they preferentially occur in multiply innervated muscle fibers.

    Background:

    • Cytoplasmic inclusion bodies have been observed in human extraocular muscles.
    • Their nature and significance, particularly in relation to muscle fiber types, remain subjects of investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and characteristics of cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in rabbit extraocular muscle.
    • To determine the association of these bodies with specific muscle fiber types and their potential as indicators of pathology.

    Main Methods:

    • Electron microscopy was used to examine serial reconstructions of rabbit superior rectus muscle fibers.
    • Muscle fibers were categorized based on innervation (singly vs. multiply innervated) and diameter characteristics.

    Main Results:

    • Cytoplasmic inclusion bodies were identified in the orbital surface layer of rabbit superior rectus muscle.
    • These bodies were observed in multiply innervated fibers (4.5% of samples) but not in singly innervated fibers.
