    Summary

    Peripheral neuropathy in asbestosis patients shows a slight trend towards lowered spirometrical values but doesn't cause decreased pulmonary function. Asbestosis lung dysfunction doesn't significantly impact nervous system involvement.

    Background:

    • Asbestosis, a lung disease caused by asbestos exposure, is often associated with neurological complications.
    • Peripheral neuropathy is frequently observed in patients with asbestosis, raising questions about its impact on lung function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between neurological signs, particularly peripheral neuropathy, and pulmonary function in asbestosis patients.
    • To determine if peripheral neuropathy contributes to decreased lung function in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Detailed neurological and pulmonary function tests were performed on 115 asbestosis patients.
    • Spirometry and diffusing capacity measurements were analyzed in relation to the presence or absence of peripheral neuropathy.

    • The observed spirometrical changes in asbestosis patients with peripheral neuropathy appear to be a parallel phenomenon rather than a causal relationship.
    • Pulmonary dysfunction in asbestosis does not significantly contribute to the development of central or peripheral nervous system involvement.
