    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Biophysics

    Context:

    • Investigating the structural-functional organization of hemostatic clots.
    • Understanding the role of platelets in clot mechanical properties.

    Purpose:

    • To verify the hypothesis on the structural-functional organization of the hemostatic clot.
    • To investigate the influence of platelets and their aggregate condition on clot mechanical properties.

    Summary:

    • Platelet aggregation, induced by ADP and mixing, was found to inhibit clot retraction, evidenced by reduced amplitude on the thromboelastogram.
    • Simultaneous monitoring of thromboelastography, coagulogram, and platelet degranulation showed clot contraction follows platelet viscid metamorphosis and fibrin filament sedimentation.
    • The hemostatic clot is characterized as a fibrin-platelet structure with platelets at its nodes, responsible for clot retraction via their contractile properties.

    Impact:

    • Provides insights into the mechanical properties of hemostatic clots.
    • Highlights the critical role of platelet aggregation and contractile function in clot retraction.
    • Contributes to understanding the complex processes of hemostasis.
