    Background:

    • Lithium carbonate is a common mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder.
    • The potential long-term effects of lithium therapy on hematopoiesis require investigation.

    Observation:

    • A case study identified acute myeloid leukemia in a 34-year-old male patient undergoing lithium carbonate treatment.
    • Seven additional cases of myeloid leukemia following lithium therapy were identified in the literature.

    Findings:

    • Lithium therapy was associated with the development of acute or chronic myeloid leukemia.
    • Lithium was observed to enhance granulopoiesis, a process involved in white blood cell production.

    Implications:

    • Lithium may play a role in initiating or promoting the development of leukemia.
