Background:

Thyrotoxicosis diagnosis can be challenging, often requiring differentiation from conditions with similar symptoms.
Accurate and efficient diagnostic tools are crucial for timely patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a novel thyrotoxicosis index for improved diagnostic accuracy.
To assess the index's effectiveness in classifying patients with suspected thyroid dysfunction.

Main Methods:

A new thyrotoxicosis index was calculated based on the frequency of signs and symptoms.
The index was developed using a documented population of 189 patients with thyrotoxicosis and pseudo thyrotoxicosis.
The index was applied to a computerized dataset of 3,596 patients presenting with thyroid complaints.

The index effectively stratified patients into four distinct groups based on diagnostic probability.
An index score ≥ 8.5 indicated a high likelihood of thyrotoxicosis (92.5% certainty).
Scores between 5 and 8.5 suggested a 3 in 5 probability of thyrotoxicosis, while scores < 5 indicated a 1 in 5 probability or rough thyrotoxicosis. Scores ≤ -1 allowed for thyrotoxicosis refutation (98% certainty).

Conclusions:

The developed thyrotoxicosis index offers a reliable method for differentiating thyrotoxicosis from pseudo thyrotoxicosis.
This index can aid clinicians in the diagnostic process, improving the management of thyroid disorders.
