    Summary

    The red blood cell sodium/potassium ratio can help diagnose digitalis toxicity, but it has weak predictive value alone. Combining it with plasma digoxin levels improves diagnostic accuracy for digitalis intoxication.

    Background:

    • Digitalis toxicity is a serious concern in patients receiving digoxin therapy.
    • Accurate diagnosis of digitalis toxicity is crucial for patient management.
    • Existing diagnostic methods have limitations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic value of the red blood cell (RBC) sodium/potassium (Na/K) ratio in digitalis toxicity.
    • To compare the predictive value of RBC Na/K ratio, plasma digoxin levels, and their combination.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 60 adult patients, including healthy volunteers, patients with heart disease, and patients on chronic digoxin therapy (nontoxic and toxic).
    • Measured RBC Na/K ratio and plasma digoxin levels in different patient groups.

    • The combined approach may offer a more reliable indicator for diagnosing digoxin toxicity.
