    Summary

Computed tomography (CT) can measure renal parenchymal volume and contrast enhancement to assess kidney function. This reproducible method correlates well with established nuclear medicine techniques for evaluating renal function.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Radiology
    • Nuclear Medicine

    Background:

    • Assessing individual kidney function is crucial for diagnosing and managing various renal diseases.
    • Current methods for measuring renal function may have limitations in spatial resolution or reproducibility.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate a computed tomography (CT) based method for assessing regional renal function per unit of parenchymal volume.
    • To correlate CT-derived measurements with established nuclear medicine assessments of renal function.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized computed tomography (CT) to measure renal parenchymal volume and the tissue-plasma ratio of contrast enhancement following bolus injection.
    • Performed 67 CT studies on 50 patients, including 17 undergoing pre- and postoperative evaluations.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Included patients with hydronephrosis, renovascular disease, pyelonephritis, and healthy controls.
  • Main Results:

    • The product of the tissue-plasma ratio of contrast enhancement and calculated renal parenchymal volume showed good correlation with individual renal function.
    • Renal function was independently measured using 99mTc-dimercaptosuccinic acid and 131I-hippuran scintigraphy.
    • The CT-based method demonstrated reproducibility.

    Conclusions:

    • Computed tomography-based assessment of contrast enhancement and parenchymal volume is a reliable indicator of regional renal function.
    • This reproducible CT method offers detailed visualization and functional assessment of individual kidneys.
    • The findings support the use of CT for a more comprehensive evaluation of renal function.
