[Corticotropin studies in essential hypertension].

J Julesz

Zeitschrift Fur Die Gesamte Innere Medizin Und Ihre Grenzgebiete

    Summary

Plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) was lower in patients with spontaneous hypertension, while serum cortisol was higher. Clonidine treatment effectively reduced ACTH, cortisol, and renin activity in these patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Cardiovascular Physiology

    Context:

    • Spontaneous hypertension is a complex condition.
    • Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) plays a role in the stress response and blood pressure regulation.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate plasma ACTH and serum cortisol levels in patients with spontaneous hypertension.
    • To evaluate the effect of clonidine on these hormonal markers.

    Summary:

    • Radioimmunoassay (RIA) revealed decreased plasma ACTH in 17 out of 21 hypertension patients, with concurrent elevated serum cortisol.
    • Clonidine administration resulted in significant reductions in plasma ACTH, serum cortisol, and renin activity.

    Impact:

    • Suggests a potential dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in spontaneous hypertension.
    • Highlights clonidine's potential therapeutic role in modulating hormonal imbalances associated with hypertension.
