    Summary

    Polyglycolic acid tubes show promise as absorbable microvascular grafts. While no arterial grafts remained open, 50% of venous grafts were successful in this pilot study.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of polyglycolic acid (PGA) tubes as potential microvascular grafts in a rat model.
    • To assess the patency, tissue response, and degradation of PGA tubes used for arterial and venous grafting.

    Main Methods:

    • An experimental pilot study was conducted using 15 rats.
    • Polyglycolic acid tubes were implanted as grafts in 8 femoral arteries and 12 femoral veins.
    • Grafts were followed up for patency and tissue integration for up to 4 months.

    Main Results:

    • None of the 8 femoral arterial grafts remained patent after follow-up.
    • 6 out of 12 (50%) femoral venous grafts remained patent.
    • Patent venous grafts showed neointima formation and evidence of vascular wall regeneration.
    • The polyglycolic acid tube material was observed to be absorbed over time.

    Conclusions:

    • Polyglycolic acid tubes demonstrated potential as absorbable vascular grafts, particularly for venous applications.
    • Further development is needed to improve patency rates in arterial grafting.
    • The observed tissue regeneration and graft absorption suggest promise for future microvascular reconstructive surgery.
