    Summary

Torsion of the fallopian tube is a rare complication that can occur years after tubal ligation. Hydrosalpinx, a common post-sterilization condition, appears to increase the risk of this rare event.

    Area of Science:

    • Gynecology
    • Reproductive Surgery

    Background:

    • Tubal ligation is a common method of female sterilization.
    • Certain sterilization techniques, such as Pomeroy's, Irving's, or the Viennese school method, involve suspending a segment of the fallopian tube.
    • Hydrosalpinx, a fluid accumulation within the fallopian tube, is a known post-sterilization complication.

    Observation:

    • Four cases of fallopian tube torsion were observed following tubal ligation procedures.
    • The onset of torsion occurred between two and eight years after sterilization.
    • The affected fallopian tubes were suspended by narrow mesenteries, consistent with specific sterilization techniques.

    Findings:

    • Torsion of the fallopian tube is a rare but recognized complication after tubal ligation.
    • The risk of torsion appears higher with sterilization methods that create a narrow mesentery in the fallopian tube.
    • Pre-existing hydrosalpinx may be a predisposing factor for fallopian tube torsion post-sterilization.

    Implications:

    • Clinicians should be aware of the potential for late-onset fallopian tube torsion after sterilization.
    • Understanding the specific surgical techniques and post-operative conditions like hydrosalpinx can aid in risk assessment.
    • Further research may be warranted to elucidate the exact mechanisms and incidence of this rare complication.
