Intracranial extracerebral brain heterotopia. Case report

Background:

• Intracranial heterotopia is a rare congenital anomaly where brain tissue is found outside its normal location.
• Sphenoid ridge meningiomas are common intracranial tumors, but heterotopic brain tissue in this location is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

• A large cystic cavity containing heterotopic brain tissue was identified on the medial left sphenoid ridge.
• The resected heterotopic brain measured 8 x 4 x 3 cm and was estimated to be of 7-8 months gestational age.

Findings:

• The resected tissue comprised components of the cerebrum, brain stem, and cerebellum.
• Detailed anatomical and cytoarchitectural analysis of the heterotopic brain tissue is presented.

Implications:

• Successful surgical resection of intracranial heterotopic brain can yield positive clinical outcomes.
• This case contributes to the understanding of rare brain malformations and their surgical management.
