    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Nephrology

    Background:

    • Wilms' tumor is exceptionally rare in adults, with no established clinical guidelines.
    • This study investigates adult nephroblastoma, differentiating it from pediatric cases and adult renal cancer.

    Observation:

    • Ten adult patients (16-29 years) with Wilms' tumor were studied, representing 0.9% of kidney tumor patients.
    • Adult Wilms' tumor presents with a prolonged latent period and diagnostic challenges.
    • Angiography was identified as the most effective diagnostic tool.

    Findings:

    • Adult Wilms' tumor demonstrated resistance to radiation therapy, unlike pediatric cases.
    • Combined treatment (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy) was used in 7 patients; palliative care in 3.
    • Treatment outcomes were poor, with 6 out of 10 patients dying within 7-19 months.

    Implications:

    • Findings highlight the unique characteristics and poor prognosis of adult Wilms' tumor.
    • Emphasizes the need for further research into effective treatment strategies for this rare adult malignancy.
    • Suggests a critical review of current treatment protocols for adult nephroblastoma.
