    Summary

    Circulating immune complexes (CIC) were found in 43.5% of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients, alongside reduced complement system activity. These findings suggest CIC may contribute to the development of RP.

    Background:

    • Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited retinal diseases.
    • The role of the immune system in RP pathogenesis is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence of circulating immune complexes (CIC) in RP patients.
    • To examine alterations in the complement system in RP patients.
    • To determine the correlation between CIC and complement system components in RP.

    Main Methods:

    • Study included 46 patients with RP and 100 healthy controls.
    • Assessed CIC presence using immunological assays.
    • Measured complement components C3, C4, and hemolytic activity CH50.

    Main Results:

    • CIC detected in 43.5% of RP patients.
    • Significantly reduced levels of C3, C4, and CH50 observed in RP patients compared to controls (p < 0.001).
    • Statistically significant correlations found between CIC levels and C3, C4, and CH50 values (p < 0.01 for C3/C4, p < 0.001 for CH50).

    Conclusions:

    • The study indicates a potential role for CIC in the pathogenesis of primary retinitis pigmentosa.
    • Immune system dysregulation, specifically involving CIC and the complement system, may be implicated in RP development.
