Papular polymorphic light eruption: an immunoperoxidase study using monoclonal antibodies.

J E Muhlbauer, A K Bhan, T J Harrist

    The British Journal of Dermatology
    |February 1, 1983
    PubMed
    Summary

Polymorphic light eruption involves T cells and Langerhans/indeterminate cells. These cells may injure upper dermal venules, contributing to the condition's papular form.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunodermatology
    • Cutaneous immunology

    Background:

    • Polymorphic light eruption (PLE) is a common photodermatosis.
    • The specific immune mechanisms underlying papular PLE are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the cellular infiltrate in biopsy specimens of papular polymorphic light eruption.
    • To elucidate the role of immune cells in the pathogenesis of papular PLE.

    Main Methods:

    • Immunoperoxidase techniques using monoclonal antibodies were employed on biopsy specimens from eight patients.
    • Analysis focused on identifying T cell subsets (T4, T8), B cells, macrophages (MI-positive), and Langerhans/indeterminate cells (T6-positive).

    Main Results:

    • The majority of infiltrating mononuclear cells were T cells.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • T cell subsets varied, with T8-positive cells predominant in four cases, T4-positive in two, and mixed in two.
  • Increased numbers of Langerhans/indeterminate cells were observed in five subjects; B cells and macrophages were rare.
  • Conclusions:

    • Papular polymorphic light eruption pathogenesis may involve T cells and Langerhans/indeterminate cells.
    • These cells are implicated in the injury of upper dermal venules, leading to the observed papules.
