    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Cryptococcemia, often linked to corticosteroid use, is a serious fungal infection. While survival is low, death is typically due to other infections, not cryptococcosis itself.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Mycology
    • Critical Care Medicine

    Background:

    • Cryptococcemia, a systemic fungal infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, has historically been associated with high mortality rates.
    • Understanding the clinical spectrum and outcomes of cryptococcemia is crucial for improving patient management.

    Observation:

    • This study reviewed 15 patients with cryptococcemia over 7 years.
    • Cryptococcemia was frequently associated with corticosteroid therapy, particularly recent dose increases.
    • Meningitis was common, often with a high fungal burden in cerebrospinal fluid; one-third of cases were nosocomial infections.

    Findings:

    • The one-year survival rate was 29% (4/15 patients).
    • No deaths were attributed to uncontrolled cryptococcal infection.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Other concurrent infections were the primary cause of morbidity and mortality.
  • Implications:

    • Cryptococcosis should be considered in febrile, immunocompromised patients, even with negative initial workups, especially those on corticosteroids.
    • Combined therapy with amphotericin B and 5-fluorocytosine was used.
    • Management of underlying conditions and concomitant infections is paramount for survival in cryptococcemia patients.
