    Summary

    Surgical discectomy and chymopapain (Discase) injections for lumbar disc herniation showed similar long-term outcomes. However, surgery offered better short-term relief for sciatica, despite longer anesthesia and hospitalization.

    • Surgical discectomy and chymopapain injections are treatment options.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy and outcomes of surgical discectomy versus chymopapain injection for L4/L5 disc herniation.

    Main Methods:

    • Randomized comparison of 29 patients undergoing either discectomy or chymopapain injection.
    • Patients assessed at hospital dismissal and at 6 and 12 months post-treatment.

    Main Results:

    • Chymopapain group had shorter anesthesia time and hospitalization.
    • Eight chymopapain patients required surgery within five months due to unrelieved symptoms.
