    Summary

    Glucagon administration did not improve visualization of the collecting systems and ureters during excretory urography. In fact, glucagon significantly decreased urogram quality without observed side effects.

    Background:

    • Excretory urography is a standard imaging technique for evaluating the urinary tract.
    • Glucagon has been anecdotally suggested to improve image quality by reducing bowel peristalsis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To objectively and subjectively assess the effect of glucagon on the visualization of collecting systems and ureters during excretory urography.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized, double-blind study involving 185 adult patients undergoing excretory urography.
    • Patients received either 1 mg intravenous glucagon or a placebo.
    • Glucagon/placebo was administered either 5 or 10 minutes post-contrast injection.

    Main Results:

    • No significant improvement in the visualization of collecting systems or ureters was observed in the glucagon group compared to placebo.
    • Objective and subjective analyses indicated a significant decrease in urogram quality with glucagon administration.
    • No adverse events were attributed to glucagon.

    Conclusions:

    • Intravenous glucagon does not enhance, and may significantly degrade, the quality of excretory urograms.
    • The use of glucagon in excretory urography is not recommended for improving image quality.
    • Further investigation into the mechanisms behind glucagon's negative impact on urogram quality is warranted.
