    Summary

    Vitamin E supplementation did not significantly alter high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in healthy adults. This study found no beneficial effects of vitamin E on plasma lipids, contrary to previous clinical reports.

    Background:

    • A prior clinical report suggested vitamin E administration dramatically elevates high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).
    • Elevated HDL-C is inversely associated with coronary heart disease risk.
    • The potential lipid-modifying effects of vitamin E warrant further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of vitamin E supplementation on plasma lipid profiles.
    • To determine if vitamin E administration impacts HDL-C levels in healthy adults.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted.
    • 30 healthy adults (aged 30-60) received either 800 IU/day of vitamin E or a placebo for 16 weeks.
    • Fasting HDL-C, total cholesterol, and triglycerides were measured at baseline, 8 weeks, and 16 weeks.

    Main Results:

    • Vitamin E supplementation showed no significant effect on HDL-C levels.
    • Mean changes in HDL-C at 16 weeks were -2.6 mg/dL (placebo) and -0.9 mg/dL (vitamin E).
    • No significant differences in total cholesterol or triglycerides were observed between groups; a marginal decrease in calculated LDL-C was noted in the vitamin E group.

    Conclusions:

    • Vitamin E administration (800 IU/day) does not alter plasma lipid profiles in normal adults.
    • These findings do not support the use of vitamin E for modifying plasma lipids.
    • Further research may be needed to clarify vitamin E's role in cardiovascular health.
