    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Medical Case Reports

    Background:

    • Foreign body ingestion, though rare, can lead to serious intra-abdominal complications.
    • Toothpick ingestion is an uncommon cause of gastrointestinal perforation.

    Observation:

    • An 82-year-old male presented with acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage and signs of polymicrobial sepsis.
    • Imaging revealed a toothpick perforating the duodenal bulb.

    Findings:

    • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) or similar endoscopic procedures are effective for diagnosing and treating duodenal perforations.
    • Successful endoscopic removal of the ingested toothpick was achieved, resolving the perforation.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential for ingested foreign bodies, like toothpicks, to cause life-threatening gastrointestinal complications.
    • Prompt endoscopic intervention is crucial for managing such rare but severe presentations of duodenal perforation.
