    Summary

    Human cyclic neutropenia, a rare blood disorder, involves cyclical decreases in neutrophils and other blood cells. Bone marrow origin is confirmed, but causes remain largely unknown.

    Background:

    • Human cyclic neutropenia is a rare disorder affecting blood cell production.
    • Its etiology is largely unknown, but it has a worldwide distribution.

    Observation:

    • Neutrophil cycling is characteristic, often accompanied by monocyte cycling and eosinophilia.
    • Platelet and reticulocyte cycling can occur in a subset of patients.
    • Bone marrow cell cycles and colony-stimulating factor cycles are demonstrable.

    Findings:

    • The disorder is of bone marrow origin, supported by successful allogeneic bone marrow grafting.
    • Cyclic neutropenia may represent a heterogeneous group of disorders.

    Implications:

    • Understanding cyclic neutropenia provides insights into hematopoietic regulation and blood cell differentiation.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the diverse causes of this condition.
