Clinical experience with ceftazidime in urology in Japan

Ceftazidime was given in a total of 563 cases of urinary tract infections in Japan. The efficacy rate was found to be 75% in the 537 assessable cases. In 464 cases of complicated urinary tract infection, the efficacy rate was 78% when it was assessed according to a unified protocol after 5 days' treatment. Bacterial eradication rate and pyuria clearance rate in these cases were 67% and 33%, respectively. Adverse events were noted in 1.4% and abnormal laboratory findings in 2.8% or less. From these findings, ceftazidime was considered to be very effective in urinary tract infections, with safely comparable to that of other drugs, and to be particularly useful for infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens.
