Carbamazepine in restless legs. A controlled pilot study.

Summary

Carbamazepine may reduce restless legs syndrome symptoms for some patients. In a small trial, patients experienced fewer restless legs attacks with carbamazepine compared to placebo.

Background:

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs.
Current treatments for RLS have varying efficacy and side effect profiles.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of carbamazepine in managing symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome.
To compare carbamazepine treatment against a placebo in RLS patients.

Main Methods:

A double-blind, cross-over trial was conducted with six RLS patients.
Patients received carbamazepine and placebo in random order over two four-week periods.
Global evaluation by patients and physician determined treatment preference.

Main Results:

Three patients and the physician preferred carbamazepine treatment.
The remaining three patients preferred neither treatment but reported less severe symptoms with carbamazepine.
No patient reported improvement with placebo compared to carbamazepine.

Conclusions:

Carbamazepine may be effective in reducing the frequency of restless legs attacks in certain patient populations.
Further research is warranted to confirm carbamazepine's role in RLS management.
