    Summary

    A new hepatitis B vaccine, developed over 10 years, is safe and effective. This vaccine, made from inactivated virus surface proteins, protects most individuals aged 3 months and older for at least 5 years.

    Background:

    • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection poses a significant global health challenge.
    • Previous research laid the groundwork for developing an effective HBV vaccine.
    • The need for a safe and accessible HBV vaccine has been recognized for decades.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report on the development and evaluation of a novel hepatitis B vaccine.
    • To assess the efficacy and safety of the new vaccine in a large human cohort.
    • To determine the duration of protective immunity conferred by the vaccine.

    Main Methods:

    • The vaccine was developed using purified, inactivated, noninfectious surface proteins of the hepatitis B virus.
    • Derived from incomplete virus surface protein particles from plasma of HBV carriers.
    • Evaluated in over 13,000 human vaccinees through a three-dose regimen.
