    ULCERATIVE COLITIS: A SURVEY OF NINETY-FIVE CASES.

    Background:

    • Functional bladder-sphincter dyssynergia involves learned incoordination of bladder and urethral sphincter activity during voiding.
    • This condition often stems from painful urination history (infections, surgery) or harsh toilet training.
    • Symptoms include chronic diurnal urinary frequency, urge incontinence, and nocturnal enuresis.

    Observation:

    • An 8-year-old girl with chronic urinary issues was treated using EMG biofeedback.
    • Treatment involved pelvic floor muscle exercises (tense-relax) and voiding relaxation techniques.
    • EMG biofeedback was applied via perianal and perivaginal surface electrodes.

    Findings:

    • Significant reduction in diurnal urgency and frequency occurred within 3 weeks.
    • Complete recovery of normal urinary function, including nocturnal continence, was achieved by the 13th session (5 months).
    • Treatment gains were maintained at a 1-year follow-up, confirmed by urodynamic studies.

    Implications:

    • EMG biofeedback offers a non-pharmacological, effective treatment for pediatric functional bladder-sphincter dyssynergia.
    • This approach can restore normal urinary function and improve quality of life in affected children.
    • Pelvic floor rehabilitation combined with biofeedback shows promise for managing complex voiding disorders.
