Long-term Behavioral Tracking of Freely Swimming Weakly Electric Fish
Published on: March 6, 2014
Abstract:
Theoretically, for anatomical reasons, the use of electric current should be an efficient killing method on whales, and a number of experiments with electric harpoons have therefore been previously carried out. Even though killing time was reduced in relation to the use of the detonating grenade harpoon, results were inconsistent, mainly because of technical problems. The method therefore seems to be too uncertain to be used as an alternative to present catching methods.

Electrical Energy
Using electric appliances for a longer period of time consumes more electrical energy and results in a higher electric bill. The energy produced by the transfer of electrons from one point to another is known as electrical energy. If power is delivered at a constant rate, the electrical energy can be defined as the product of power used by the device for a period of time. The energy unit on electric bills is the kilowatt-hour, where one kilowatt-hour is equivalent to 3.6 × 106 joules. The...
Faraday's Law
Faraday's law state that the induced emf is the negative change in the magnetic flux per unit of time. Any change in the magnetic field or change in the orientation of the area of the coil with respect to the magnetic field induces a voltage (emf). The magnetic flux measures the number of magnetic field lines through a given surface area. Magnetic flux is estimated from the integral of the dot product of the magnetic field vector and the area vector. The negative sign describes the direction in...
Back EMF
Generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, whereas motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. A motor works by sending a current through a loop of wire located in a magnetic field. As a result, the magnetic field exerts a torque on the loop. This rotates a shaft, extracting mechanical work from the electrical current sent in initially. When the coil of a motor is turned, magnetic flux changes through the coil, and an emf (consistent with Faraday's law) is induced.
