    Summary

    Airway hyperresponsiveness, measured by PC20, is common in chronic bronchitis, particularly with airway obstruction. Histamine and methacholine responses were similar, indicating a reliable measure of bronchial reactivity.

    Background:

    • Chronic bronchitis is a significant respiratory condition.
    • Airway hyperresponsiveness is a key feature in some chronic lung diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate airway responsiveness to inhaled histamine and methacholine in chronic bronchitis patients.
    • To determine the prevalence of airway hyperresponsiveness (PC20 < 16 mg/ml) in this cohort.
    • To explore correlations between airway hyperresponsiveness, spirometry, and other biomarkers.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed airway responsiveness using PC20 (concentration causing a 20% fall in FEV1) with histamine and methacholine.
    • Recruited 28 subjects with chronic bronchitis, excluding asthma.
    • Performed spirometry to assess baseline airway caliber (FEV1/FVC ratio, FEF50).

    • Airway hyperresponsiveness is frequently observed in chronic bronchitis.
    • Airway obstruction is a strong indicator of concurrent airway hyperresponsiveness.
    • PC20 is a reliable method for assessing bronchial reactivity in chronic bronchitis.
