    Summary

    A novel single-dose cefuroxime sodium infiltration effectively prevented surgical wound infections in thoracic surgery patients. This method significantly reduced both wound and pulmonary infections compared to traditional approaches.

    Background:

    • Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a significant concern in major thoracic surgery.
    • Conventional antibiotic prophylaxis often involves multiple parenteral doses.
    • There is a need for simpler, effective infection prevention strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate a single preincisional intraparietal infiltration of cefuroxime sodium for wound infection prophylaxis.
    • To compare the efficacy of this method against a saline control in major elective thoracic surgery.
    • To assess the impact on both wound and pulmonary infection rates.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective, double-blind, randomized study involving 100 patients.
