    Summary

Enflurane anesthesia significantly reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by 21% in patients undergoing surgery. This decline in kidney function is comparable to other general anesthetics.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Anesthesiology
    • Surgical Medicine

    Background:

    • Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a key indicator of kidney function.
    • General anesthetics can impact renal hemodynamics and GFR.
    • Enflurane is an inhalational anesthetic agent used in surgical procedures.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the effect of enflurane anesthesia on GFR in surgical patients.
    • To quantify the change in GFR during and after enflurane administration.

    Main Methods:

    • Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was measured in 10 patients before and after surgery.
    • Patients received enflurane for anesthesia during the operative period.

    Main Results:

    • A significant mean decrease of 21% in GFR was observed post-anesthesia.
    • The reduction in GFR was consistent across the patient cohort.

    Conclusions:

    • Enflurane anesthesia leads to a notable reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
    • The observed impact on GFR is similar to that of other commonly used general anesthetics.
