    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Ophthalmology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Microbiology

    Background:

    • Salmonella typhimurium is a common bacterial pathogen.
    • Ocular infections in felines are not well-documented.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the clinical manifestations and pathological outcomes of experimental Salmonella typhimurium conjunctival infection in cats.
    • To determine the potential for fecal shedding following ocular inoculation.

    Main Methods:

    • Experimental infection of cats with Salmonella typhimurium via conjunctival inoculation.
    • Clinical sign monitoring, including ocular and systemic signs.
    • Microbiological culturing from conjunctival swabs and rectal swabs.
    • Necropsy and histopathological examination of tissues, including lymph nodes.

    Main Results:

    • Cats developed clinical signs of conjunctivitis, including lacrimation and discharge.
    • Absolute neutrophilia and suppurative inflammation were observed.
    • Salmonella typhimurium was intermittently cultured from ocular and rectal sites.
    • Enlarged lymph nodes and chronic conjunctivitis were noted on histopathology.

    Conclusions:

    • Salmonella typhimurium can cause primary conjunctivitis in cats.
    • Ocular infection may lead to fecal shedding of the bacteria without systemic illness.
    • The conjunctival route is a viable infection pathway with potential for transmission.
